Over the coming months I'm having earthling designs build me a number of compressors namely a 2-1176 clone, SSL G series mix bus clone and an LA-2A clone. To reduce the amount of work Lach has to do for these projects I'm gathering a lot of the parts myself, and also doing the panel layouts/printing and finishing myself. I dabble in electronics but I'll leave stuffing the PCBs and the wiring in Lach's capable hands!
I thought I'd write a series of blogs to show you all the progress of the projects, as it might help any of you DIY'ers out there who are confused about a particular element of these projects.
THE SSL
The first cab off the rank will be the clone of the SSL mix buss compressor. The circuit is designed by Gyraf at www.gyraf.dk. His design has no side chain, or automatic release, but to be honest I don't really want either of those on a master bus compressor. I designed the front panel layout in photoshop, using a similar design to the original, placing the power switch where the auto release button normally is to make it look more authentic. If any DIY kids out there want to use my front panel layout, go ahead, just click on the link below.
To print the design onto Lazertran, you need to reverse it, email me if you don't have the software to do so. The SSL will have a brushed aluminum finish with the lazertran writing. This is the best option in this case because the writing and design is so simple.
I bought the SSL PCB from this guy in the Prodigy Pro DIY forum. His work is great and we should all be trying to support small businesses like this in these tough financial times. His rates are very reasonable and he ships world wide. His PCB is specifically for the Gyraf design. FOr the project you need the Sifam Director 14 meter, which I sourced through http://www.switchesplus.com.au/ who also supply the authentic SSL knobs.
This is where I'm up to on the SSL, I'll write regular updates as I go along.
